Swedish Physicians Against Nuclear Weapons

Learn About Nuclear Weapons is owned and managed by the organisation Swedish Physicians Against Nuclear Weapons, which was founded in 1981 and is a non-profit and politically independent organisation with nearly 2500 physicians and medical students as members. Swedish Physicians Against Nuclear Weapons is part of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. The Swedish Physicians Against Nuclear Weapons is also part of ICAN – International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. ICAN was the driving force behind the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which was adopted on 7 July 2017. ICAN was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.

The main purpose of Swedish Physicians Against Nuclear Weapons is to spread knowledge about the humanitarian and medical consequences of nuclear weapons and to contribute to this knowledge through scientific research. The aim is to strengthen opinion against nuclear weapons, so that nuclear war is prevented.
